An inspiring journeyBack to news
One of our current Traineeship students has inspired those around her with her story of success. Here she writes about the journey she has taken:
"I first heard about Orchard Hill through my home schooling teachers, they said it would be a great opportunity for me and that I should apply for it.
I was hesitant at first as I was not keen on the idea of starting college because I had not been to school since I was fourteen and I wasn’t used to the environment
When Olly came round for my assessment I was really nervous because he asked loads of questions about what I was like at school. I didn’t get on well at school, I was always in and out of trouble, always bunking off because I could not stand being there.
When the assessment was finished I was offered a place and I was really excited but also very nervous.
When I started at Orchard Hill the teachers were nice and helpful, the other students were kind and I actually liked it. The class was small which made me feel more comfortable.
Vanessa my Job Coach used to get the train with me to college because I couldn’t go places by myself, it really helped build my confidence and I could soon get trains on my own.
I have improved in all my maths and English, I also understand more about the world of work and have enjoyed studying Employability. I have even done all my homework and my work folder is really neat which I am proud of and I haven’t bunked off once!
My self-confidence has also improved and I don’t get agitated when in class.
My work placement has been in a traditional barbers in West Drayton. I have been learning to do beard trims and I'm now training on haircuts. I have really enjoyed this and it is what I want to do for a career.
Amanda my teacher researched apprenticeships in Barbering and got me an interview at Hayes Campus. I was nervous about attending the interview so Amanda came with me to support. During the interview I was asked lots of questions which I answered as best I could. I was offered a place, so providing I pass my maths and English I'll be starting an apprenticeship in Barbering in September 2016.
I have really enjoyed attending the traineeship at Orchard Hill College and I don’t want to leave!"
