Last term student Ava, from our Vocational Progression Centre in Carshalton did a trial volunteering session at Phoenix Rangers for Sutton Mencap. Phoenix Rangers is a group for young people aged 10-16 years old with Aspergers. Young people can chose what they like to do, ranging from sports, games, competitions and arts and crafts.

Ava helped to support the young people with tasks such as ordering food and writing session plans. She spent most of her time there interacting with the young people and helped to make them feel more comfortable.

When Ava leaves Orchard Hill College, she would like to be a teacher. Her lecturer Nicola said “This is a fantastic opportunity and makes Ava feel valued as part of the local community. This placement will help Ava to gain the skills she needs to become a specialist teacher. She did such a great job – it’s amazing to see her blossom helping others. Well done Ava!”
